A 12-year follow-up epidemiological study (Lefevre-Arbogast et al. Neurology, 2018) conducted by Inserm, Activ’Inside, and Harvard, was performed on 1,329 health French people aged 65 years old and above to investigate how a diet rich in polyphenols could prevent cognitive decline.
When comparing the population in the highest quartile of polyphenol intake with the lowest quartile, researchers found higher polyphenol consumption reduced the risk of having a severe cognitive decline by 50%.
The study authors concluded that a polyphenol-rich diet containing specific plant products (nuts, citrus, berries, leafy vegetables, soy, cereals, olive oil) accompanied by red wine and tea was associated with lower dementia risk.
