A curcumin extract marketed by supplier OmniActive Health Technologies called Curcuwin Ultra+ was evidenced to be 144-times more bioavailable than a standard curcumin supplement, according to the results of a randomized, double-blind, crossover study appearing in Advances in Therapy which involved 24 healthy volunteers under fasting conditions. The findings will be presented during this year’s Experimental Biology (EB) meeting in Philadelphia from April 2-5. OmniActive first began discussing these results upon the launch of the ingredient in late 2021, and now, ahead of publication, noting that the company uses a specialized process that incorporates multiple bioenhancers to protect and deliver curcuminoids.
In the acute-dose study, the volunteers who were between the ages of 18 and 55 received either a single dose of Curcuwin Ultra+ at 250 mg, 500 mg, or an 1800 mg dose of a standard 95% turmeric extract, in a three-dose crossover design.
Curcumin extract bioavailability was measured through blood samples collected before dosing, and then intermittently for a full 24-hour period after dosing, with total curcuminoids measured as curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, bisdemethoxycurcumin, and tetrahydrocurcumin using a liquid chromatography method.
Among the study participants, who were in a state of fasting, the 250 mg dose of Curcuwin Ultra+ was 144-times more bioavailable than the standard curcumin extract – the dose was measured as equal to 30 capsules containing the standard extract.
Furthermore, absorption with Curcuwin Ultra+ was 40% faster than standard curcumin, the authors of the study noted.
