Tocotrienols, a more potent family of vitamin E compounds, may have a role in improving liver condition in people with type 2 diabetes and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver (MASL), a new pilot study appearing in the Journal of the Indian Medical Association found.
The correlation between type 2 diabetes and MASL, formerly known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), has become a growing health concern, as both of these prevalent conditions often coexist and influence each other’s progression. Factors such as type 2 diabetes also contribute to advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis in MASL.
In the open-label, randomized study conducted at Chennai’s Tertiary Care Center for Diabetes, 34 participants were randomly assigned to either the control group or a group receiving 200 mg of tocotrienols twice daily as a supplement. After three months, both groups were evaluated for multiple markers of liver function.
The findings revealed that tocotrienols were linked to a reduction in liver enzymes and improved liver stiffness and fatty liver. Compared to the control group, the group receiving tocotrienols had better levels of serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), as well as less liver stiffness and fatty liver. No improvement was observed in the control group and no adverse events were reported throughout the trial.
