A newly-created blend of Boswellia serrata and ginger extracts branded by PLT Health solutions as Serezin was associated with improvements in self-reported measures of sleep quality, mood, and aches and pains, in a new double-blind, placebo-controlled study.
Based on how the supplement ingredient performed compared to placebo, Serezin appeared to reduce the amount of time it took users to sleep, improve their quality of sleep, and help them wake up more easily, with improved alertness and mood.
"Achieving restorative sleep is pivotal, as it directly correlates with heightened alertness, cognitive function, mood, energy levels, and general health. Study Details
The four-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted on 60 healthy men and women between 50 and 70 years old, who reported at baseline that they experienced disturbed sleep due to everyday aches and pains. They either took 300 mg of Serezin or a placebo daily, and were evaluated at one, two, and four weeks.
By the first week, participants who took Serezin reported feeling more rested and restored – by four weeks in, the treatment group had 64% greater improvements in questionnaire scores related to restorative sleep than those taking a placebo.
Participants in the treatment group also started to report significant improvements in everyday aches and pains by day seven, and by the end of the fourth week, they experienced a 2.6-times greater reduction in nighttime discomfort and a 75% greater reduction in daytime discomfort scores compared to the placebo group.
With statistically significant improvements starting at day 14, subjects taking Serezin reported improvements in getting to sleep which became 85% greater than those taking a placebo, and sleep quality saw a 93% greater improvement as well, based on assessments using the Leeds Sleep Evaluation Questionnaire.
By two weeks in, the Serezin group also had a significantly easier time waking up in the morning and feeling more alert than the placebo group, based on the Leeds Sleep Evaluation Questionnaire.
Finally, self-reported mood also saw significantly greater improvements in the Serezin group compared to placebo. The mood states evaluated with a validated questionnaire included tension, depression, anger, vigor, fatigue, and confusion. Serezin subjects reported improved overall mood starting at Day 14, which became 2.2-times greater than the placebo group by the study’s end.
“While certain stages of sleep are considered more restorative based on the physiological functions observed during those sleep stages, the term Restorative Sleep is an independent and distinct concept that focuses on the qualitative experience of the benefits of sleep. While many of us look to tracking devices to understand our sleep, these data often do not align with our experience.
