In keeping with its ongoing commitment and investment in science, DSM has sponsored the Young Minority Investigators Travel and Oral Competition at Experimental Biology 2013 held in Boston, MA from April 19-23. The American Society for Nutrition (ASN), the premier professional organization for nearly 4,000 nutrition scientists and practitioners, and constituent society of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) annually offers Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) Travel Awards to underrepresented scholars, postdoctoral fellows and students to help recruit and develop them in the field of nutrition. The MARC awards help these underrepresented minorities participate in scientific and networking opportunities at the ASN annual meeting at Experimental Biology.
For the third year, DSM Nutritional Products has sponsored the American Society for Nutrition Minority Affairs Committee. This year, 18 young scholars were selected for ASN MARC Travel Awards. After review by a scientific jury, finalists were chosen to give oral presentations at the ASN Young Minority Investigator Oral Competition on Saturday, April 20. Dr. Teresa Davis, ASN president, introduced the 18 MARC Scholars at the ASN Awards Reception. One, Christine Hutchson from Iowa State University was awarded the 2013 Grand Prize for Young Minority Investigators supported by DSM Nutritional Products.
“Since the 1930s, we have been committed to the science and people that create it. We are pleased to be engaged in Experimental Biology as part of our ongoing commitment to brighter lives,” says Jim Hamilton, president, DSM Nutritional Products, USA.
Dr. Michael McBurney, head of scientific affairs, DSM Nutritional Products, added, “Although the world population will soon exceed 7 billion, all of whom require essential nutrients and sustainable food sources, people are still our greatest resource. DSM Nutritional Products is proud to partner with the American Society for Nutrition to help young scholars access the richness of Experimental Biology. These winners will be our science leaders tomorrow.”
