Former Associate Publisher of Nutraceuticals World Stephen Edward Lipscomb, 70, passed away on Aug. 22, 2021 following a battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He is survived by his wife Nina and daughter Patricia.
Born in Astoria, Queens, NY, Steve grew up in Glen Rock, NJ. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Northeastern University in Boston. Following a series of advertising positions in Boston and San Francisco, he joined Rodman Media in 1998, which launched Nutraceuticals World later that year. Following a distinguished career in sales, advertising, and business development, he retired in January of 2020.
“Steve was a character, well known throughout the industry at trade shows and exhibitions around the world for over 20 years,” said Matthew Montgomery, Executive Vice President of Rodman Media. “He joined Nutraceuticals World when it launched in 1998 and was very proud of the success of the magazine. He was dedicated to the markets it covers and the clients he served. He had a steel-trap mind that could remember details from many years earlier. Most of his clients became friends when meeting his large personality for the first time. Within Rodman Media he was a loyal colleague, a good friend, and will be missed by all.”
“Steve played an intricate role in the success of Nutraceuticals World,” noted Rodman Media President and CEO Rodman J. Zilenziger Jr. “From the early days post-launch, Steve was front and center in all of our sales efforts. In fact, until his retirement last year, Steve was the longest serving employee on Nutraceuticals World. He is greatly missed.”
“Steve was a larger-than-life figure, and a pillar in the global nutraceuticals community,” said Sean Moloughney, Editor of Nutraceuticals World. “I worked with Steve for about 12 of his 21 years at Rodman Media. He introduced me to countless colleagues and friends as we traveled to industry events. Steve had an impeccable memory and sharp wit, which he used to connect people and develop business for others—while at the same time selling the back cover of the next issue. Steve was one-of-a-kind. I’m saddened by his passing. My thoughts and sympathies are with his family, friends, and loved ones.”
Personal
Steve met Nina (Kurowski) in 1972; they married in 1982 while residing in Brookline, MA. They relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area (Pleasant Hill and Rohnert Park) where they resided until a year after the birth of their daughter Patricia. They returned to Glen Rock to be close to family.
Those who knew him well knew Steve had a strong admiration for the comedic talents of Stanley Laurel and Oliver Hardy, especially their film, “Sons of the Desert.” In fact, he was a devoted Brother of the Sons of the Desert International Admiration Society (Flying Deuces Tent).
Steve loved traveling, communing with friends, and engaging in banter on all manner of topics. A foodie at heart, he enjoyed scouting dining establishments throughout his travels, sharing his experiences with family and friends. Music, history, collectibles, reading, and trivia were all among Steve’s passions.

His professional career included working with General Foods and various Boston area department stores while at Northeastern. He took great pride in selling ad space at the Phoenix in Boston. During his 10 years in the San Francisco Bay Area, he worked at Area Lighting Research in Santa Rosa, and McGraw-Hill in San Francisco. When he and his family returned to Glen Rock, he worked with Jersey Central Power and Light before joining Rodman Media.
At the time of this publication, a service at All Saints Episcopal Church, Glen Rock, was being planned for a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated in his memory at the Parkinson’s Foundation.
Upon his retirement from Rodman Media in January of 2020, Nutraceuticals World republished a perspective piece Steve authored for the magazine’s 10th Anniversary print edition in 2008. In that article, he wrote in part: “Our industry is made up largely of good, committed individuals who have made my job very enjoyable ... To those companies that have supported our efforts with your advertising—thank you! I think we have both been rewarded.”
