Buckton Scott: Bridging The World

Founded in the 1960s with its headquarters in the U.K., Buckton Scott is a privately owned multinational organization active in manufacturing, import/export trade, local marketing/distribution and professional consulting. The company handles a wide range of items, including pharma­ceutical raw materials, food additives, botanical and herbal extracts, chemical intermediates and dyestuffs. The management team at Buckton Scott has many years experience in sourcing products from China and has established strong links with major manufacturing and trading organizations, both at na­tional and provincial levels.

Currently Buckton Scott is actively involved in a number of manufacturing facilities as both independent producers and joint venture partners with Chinese factories in which it is an equity holder. These activities have further strengthened ties and provided a stable base from which to offer a premium service to its customers for some of their key raw material needs. In addition to Buckton’s sales activities, the company is also able to assist customers who wish to investigate new opportunities in the Chinese market by utilizing its Wuhan, China office to provide accurate, up-to-date information on sources of supply, production capacities and technical capabilities.

Expanding on its long-standing relationship with China was Leo Cullen, vice president and COO of U.S. subsidiary, Buckton Scott Nutrition, Fairfield, NJ. “This past July the company celebrated the 25th an­niversary of its presence in China. The Wuhan office was initially established to be a liaison between the U.K. and the various manufacturing facilities within China from which Buckton was purchasing product,” he said. “At this time the office is staff­ed by Chinese na­tion­als that are fluent in English, the head of which is a registered pharmacist who is very well versed with the operations in China.”

Buckton’s involvement in nutra­ceuti­cals officially began in 1992 with the pas­sing of DSHEA and the in­creased interest in natural products. Mr. Cul­len explain­ed, “There is a tremendous history and source of natural products within China, so utilizing the organization that had already been developed, Buckton start­ed to expand into the nutraceuticals business.” Initially selling products through distributors both in the U.S. and Europe, in July of 2000 the company decided to establish Buckton Scott Nutrition in Fairfield as its own company selling to end product manufacturers. Buckton Scott Nutrition, serving North America, was set up to be a mirror image of Buckton Scott Health Products located in Essex, U.K., which serves Europe. Product offerings in the nutri­tional business range from vitamins, amino acids, herbal extracts and powders and nutraceutical products such as chondroitin and glucosamine.—R.M.
