A new store brand line of nutritional bars was launched recently by 7-Eleven, Dallas, TX. The bars, which were developed in partnership with Biochem Sports and Fitness Systems, Hauppauge, NY, contain an extra five-10 grams of protein and 150-260 calories and are available in three flavors, Chocolate Pieces, Peanut Butter Cups and Chocolate Chews. The bars are reportedly a stepping stone to create more functional foods, according to the company.

allGoode Organics, Santa Barbara, CA, last year launched Real Food Bars, a line of organic nutritional snack bars. The Chocolate Peanut Pleasure and Banana Nut Nirvana contain the fruit equivalent of a whole banana, while the Nutty Chocolate Apricot Bar provides the equivalent of two apricots. The Honey Nut Harvest, Cashew Almond Passion and Amazin' Peanut Raisin bars contain about half a serving each of whole grains and fruit.

American Body Building, Salt Lake City, UT, has launched Pure Pro™ Zero Sugar, a brand new bar that is low fat (less than three grams), has no sugar and has 33 grams of Amino Blast™ II Proprietary Protein Blend. The bar is fortified with 26 vitamins and minerals and is available in five flavors, Chocolate Mint, Chocolate Cherry Cheesecake, Chocolate Raspberry, Chocolate Caramel Fudge and Chocolate Orange.

New on the bar scene from Balance Bar, Rye Brook, NY, is Oasis, a complete nutrition bar for women that debuted last fall. Oasis has 100% DV of vitamin C, contains eight grams of soy protein and provides 22 vitamins and minerals. The six flavors are Strawberry Cheesecake, Chocolate Celebration, Chocolate Peanut Crisp, White Chocolate Raspberry, Oatmeal Raisin and Lemon Twist.

Balance Bar has also added new flavors to its Balance Gold brand. The two new offerings, Rocky Road and Chocolate Peanut Butter, are billed as rich, indulgent triple-layer bars fortified with 23 vitamins and minerals, 15 grams of protein and no artificial flavors, sweeteners or preservatives.

Finally, Balance Bar has also established a grant program for rewarding mind/body sports enthusiasts. The company will award a minimum of four grants-ranging from $500 to $10,000-to individuals that visit the company website (www.balance.com) and fill out a statement of purpose about why their particular mind/body activity is an important part of their life and how a grant from Balance Bar will enable them to continue this activity.

News at Clif Bar, Berkeley, CA, centered around its Luna™ bar achieving the status of the best selling bar in grocery stores for the first time. According to Nielsen data, the bar's market share climbed to 11.6% of the energy/nutrition bar segment for the period of 12 weeks ended October 20, 2001.

In other Clif Bar news, the company last year added two additional flavors to its line of Luna bars, Orange Bliss and Key Lime Pie, and introduced the Ice Series™ to its Clif Bar line; the Ice Series includes 50 mg of natural caffeine.

New flavors were in the spotlight at Dr. Soy, Irvine, CA, whose Dr. Soy bars contain 11 grams of non-GMO soy protein, 16 vitamins and minerals, all naturally occurring isoflavones and 350 mg of calcium. New flavors are Chocolate Mint, Iced Oatmeal and Yogurt Honey Peanut.

EAS, Golden, CO, recently unveiled its Muscle Drive Bars, which support lean muscle mass and protein synthesis and aid in muscle hydration. The bars contain 33 grams of protein and are available in Chocolate Rage and Power Oats and Spice.

A new formulation is in the spotlight at Genisoy, Fairfield, CA. As a result of several focus group studies, the company has upgraded its line with a new taste profile. The newly formulated bars, which include 20 vitamins and minerals, will be unveiled this spring along with a whole new look.

In addition, the company is launching a new line of soy snack bars, the Xtreme Bar, which includes nine grams of soy protein and 19 vitamins and minerals.

A new company called NuGo™ (Nutrition To Go) Nutrition, Pittsburgh, PA, has launched several bar products aimed at family nutrition. The all natural bar line up includes Snap Apple Cinnamon with dry apples and cinnamon; Fruity Berry Splash, which combines a splash of strawberry and raspberry; Peanut Butter Pleaser, which contains soy protein, rolled oats and crisp rice; Choco Blast, which delivers a high-energy protein boost that lasts throughout the day and Blue Berry Boom, which is low fat and vitamin fortified. All of the bars deliver 40% of the RDA of 12 essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, B12 and folic acid plus calcium and soy protein.

Odwalla, Half Moon Bay, CA-now owned by Coca Cola, Atlanta, GA, in a late 2001 purchase-recently introduced a new bar and two reformulated bars. Its new Superfood bar includes organic rolled oats, bananas and mangos baked with soy protein, spirulina and kelp. The bar provides 700 mg of micronutrients. Odwalla has also reformulated its Super Protein bar with soy protein and soy nut butter and its Chocolate Odwalla Bar, which contains chocolate, blueberries and plums.

PowerBar Inc., Berkeley, CA, has formalized its relationship with Lance Armstrong, world class cyclist, signing a three-year endorsement deal through 2004. New products at PowerBar in the past year include Pria™, touted as a mid-afternoon snack with 23 vitamins and minerals and four grams of soy protein in a smaller, 28-gram bar, a sugar free version of its ProteinPlus™ bar that includes 16 grams of soy protein and is available in two flavors, Mocha Almond Fudge and Caramel Apple, and two new flavors-Cinnamon Roll and Banana Hut-of Dipped Harvest® bars, Harvest bars with a yogurt coating.

Premier Nutrition, Carlsbad, CA, has reformulated its line of Protein Eight bars and added two new flavors, Blueberry Cheesecake and Chocolate Strawberry Mousse. Each bar contains 30-31 grams of protein (eight different types), 1-7 grams of carbohydrates and as little as one gram of sugar; the new reformulation actually lowered the sugar and carbohydrate percentages.

Rexall Sundown, Boca Raton, FL, has introduced TruSoy™, a line of soy bars, shakes and supplements that contain non-GMO soy. The TruSoy Crispy Soy Bars contain 15 grams of protein, 60 mg of soy isoflavones and 100% daily value of antioxidant E plus B6, B12 and folic acid. The bars come in three flavors, Peanut Butter Fudge, Double Chocolate Delight and Iced Lemon Dream.

In addition, Rexall has added three new flavors to its line of Carb Solutions™ energy bars, which have more than 20 grams of protein as well as vitamins and minerals. The new flavors are Frosted Blueberry, Chocolate Cappuccino Crisp and Chocolate Mint.

Bars are the latest form of Move Free®, the glucosamine/chondroitin offering from Schiff, a division of Weider Nutrition, Salt Lake City, UT. The Move Free bars, available in Apple Cinnamon and Chocolate Crunch, provide 1500 mg glucosamine and 1200 mg chondroitin in each serving.

At Universal Nutrition, New Brunswick, NJ, change has been in the works. The company has changed the name of its Doctor's LowCarb Diet Bar to Doctor's CarbRite Diet bar. The bars have also been reformulated and now include no hydrogenated oils, trans-fats or artificial sweeteners. The bars are also 100% sugar-free and contain up to 21 grams of protein. The CarbRite Diet bars are available in six flavors-S'mores, Chocolate Mint Cookie, Chocolate Brownie, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Raspberry Chocolate Truffle and Chocolate Covered Banana with Soy Nuts. New flavors in the works are Cheesecake and Glazed Cinnamon Bun.NW
