    03.01.02
    AIDP, City of Industry, CA
AIDP has come out with several new antioxidant offerings to the nutraceuticals market. It now offers zeaxanthin DC 35%, natural beta-carotene 12% and ascorbyl palmitate.

    Albion Advanced Nutrition, Clearfield, UT
Albion is highlighting copper, zinc and manganese chelates for their antioxidant capabilities. According to the company, recent studies have concluded that these three mineral chelates induce SOD (super oxide dismutase) activity to fight free radicals associated with alcohol intake.

    B&D Nutritional Ingredients, Carlsbad, CA
Two new natural source vitamin E products are now available from B&D Nutritional Ingredients. The company is offering succinate ASG (1185) and E 700 D acetate, which is a truly water dispersible vitamin E from the pines of New Zealand. Also available is the company's pine bark extract, Enzogenol.

    Biolandes, Secaucus, NJ
Biolandes has introduced Juvanol™, which is an antioxidant extracted from a combination of oak wood and grape seeds. Juvanol captures the most active ingredients from the red wines of Bordeaux, aged in French oak barrels, restituting the benefits responsible for the "French Paradox" (ellagitanins from French oak wood used for the best wine barrels; oligomers of proanthocyanidins (OPCs) from selected grape seeds). It has been tested by an independent laboratory using the 3D method, which measured the radical scavenging activity of antioxidants and their DNA protection effect. The results of this study showed that Juvanol is eight times more efficient than a standardized grape seed extract (95% polyphenols) in protecting DNA. This confirms the important contribution of oak wood to the overall antioxidant effect found in high quality red wines, a genuine source of the "French Paradox" benefits. Juvanol is manufactured at the company's GMP facilities near Bordeaux, France, from carefully selected sources of genuine French oak wood and unfermented grape seeds.

    Bioquimex Nutrition, San Antonio, TX
Bioquimex Nutrition is manufacturing and marketing lutein and zeaxanthin to the dietary supplement market. It offers Xantopina® Plus 80% lutein esters, which it claims is the highest concentration of lutein available in the market.

Buckton Scott Health Products, Rochford, Essex, U.K.

In antioxidant news at Buckton Scott, the company is highlighting Lycopene 1% PE. This product, according to the company, makes it easier to use in tableting and blends as the lycopene powder is easier to blend versus beadlets. Additionally, Lycopene 1% PE costs approximately 30-50% less than beadlets.

    Carotech, Edison, NJ
Carotech is promoting a new vitamin E antioxidant formula called the "E" Complex, which consists of all eight isomers of vitamin E-d-mixed tocopherols (alpha, beta, gamma and delta-tocopherol) and d-mixed tocotrienols (alpha, beta, gamma and delta-tocotrienol)-as the most complete and balanced antioxidant formula.

Four recent large-scale, epidemiological studies (HOPE study, SECURE study, GISSI study, PPP study) reported that alpha-tocopherol did not provide any protection against heart attacks. Although numerous objections were raised against these trials-most notably the doses used-the real problem may have been that alpha-tocopherol does not in itself provide the right vitamin E activity and protection for the heart. Gamma-tocopherol and tocotrienols were missing in all of these trials. When considering all of the heart protective properties of the other vitamin E family members (i.e., tocotrienols and gamma-tocopherol)-namely cholesterol lowering, reversal of arterial blockage, inhibition of platelet aggregation, lowering of the expression of cellular adhesions molecules, potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory-alpha-tocopherol alone is not going to be the heart's cure-all. To obtain optimal and maximum antioxidant protection the full spectrum of vitamin E-tocopherols and tocotrienols-should be used.

    Cyanotech, Kailua-Kona, HI
Cyanotech Corporation, a producer of natural astaxanthin from microalgae, has increased production capacity at its Kailua-Kona facility by 60%. The expansion will give the company 25 times greater production and will help it meet the growing demand for astaxanthin in the nutraceutical and aquaculture industries.

Recent human clinical trials with Cyanotech's natural astaxanthin yielded positive results in preventing sunburn (when taken orally) and in preventing knee soreness after vigorous leg exercises (4 mg dose). Laboratory comparisons of antioxidant strength, measured as oxygen radical quenching, have shown that Cyanotech's natural astaxanthin is considerably stronger than equivalent active amounts of beta-carotene, synthetic astaxanthin, pine bark extract and alpha-tocopherol. Two additional human clinical trials are presently underway to test astaxanthin's efficacy against symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome. The results of these studies are expected in the spring.

Draco Natural Products, San Jose, CA
Draco is touting its standardized botanical extract powders produced though water extraction, which enables more of the antioxidant polysaccharides and glycosides to be present. This is a new perspective on this process for the company as the polysaccharides and glycosides have been identified as having antioxidant capability. These chemicals are representing a new frontier in phytocompounds research and have potential benefits for immune function, liver health and energy metabolism. Most extracts produced using chemical solvents typically are unable to extract these invaluable compounds, according to the company.

    Fuji Chemical Industries, Robbinsville, NJ

Grapemax™ is the new antioxidant on the block at Fuji Chemical. Grapemax is extracted from white Chardonnay grapes grown in the Macon, Beaune and Chablis regions of France. Fuji Chemical's grape seeds are separated before the fermentation process, preserving natural phytochemicals in the seeds. Grapemax is GMO-free, 100% traceable and high in polyphenols, catechin monomers and OPCs. It also boasts a very high oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) value.

    Graminex, Saginaw, MI
Cernitin™ standardized flower pollen extract is now being positioned for its antioxidant capability at Graminex. Cernitin works synergistically because of its combination of over 39 vitamins, minerals and carotenoids, 23 essential and non-essential amino acids, 98 enzymes, polar and neutral lipids, 20 fatty acids, prostaglandins, phytosterols and long chain hydrocarbons. Unlike single antioxidants, the chemical analysis for Cernitin standardized flower pollen extract reveals that it contains potent antioxidants within each pollen grain. It contains provitamin A, which is classified within the class of phytochemicals as carotenoids. Of the more than 4000 chemically unique flavonoids known, nine have been isolated in Cernitin including quercetin, dihydroquercetin, naringenin, apigenin, sorhamnetin, myricetin, kaempferol, dihydrokampferol and luteolin. Among the 23 essential and non-essential amino acids, Cernitin contains cysteine, glutamic acid and glycine, which in combination help the liver produce glutathione. Glutathione inhibits the formation of and protects against cellular damage. It acts as a detoxifier of heavy metals and drugs and it aids in the treatment of blood and liver disorders.

    Hauser, Boulder, CO
Rossentia™, a water soluble dietary supplement extracted from the herb rosemary, has recently been added to the extract line at Botanicals International Extracts (BIE), a Hauser Company. Rossentia is manufactured using a proprietary extraction technology that selectively isolates the beneficial fraction of the rosemary herb. Rossentia, based on ORAC values, exceeds the USDA recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables per day, corresponding to 6000 Trolox Equivalents (TE) per day. BIE uses ORAC values as part of its quality control for Rossentia and will report those values for each lot of Rossentia sold. Rossentia complements BIE's other rosemary-derived product, RoseOx®, a lipid soluble antioxidant. The health benefits of RoseOx include the neutralization of free radicals, increased effectiveness of other vitamins, support of healthy vascular tissues and cellular health.

    Institut Rosell/Lallemand, Montreal, Canada
New on the antioxidant front at Institut Rosell is selenium-enriched yeast, which is a natural dietary selenium supplement clinically proven to increase selenium levels in the body. Studies show that organic selenium such as selenium yeast is more bioavailable than inorganic forms, therefore more absorbed by the body. Its natural form is selenomethionine and it has been estimated that up to 85% of selenium in selenium yeast is in the form of selenomethionine. Institut Rosell's selenium yeast is positioned as a natural antioxidant.

    Indena, Seattle, WA
Mirtoselect® has been unveiled at Indena. The company's Mirtoselect bilberry extract from Vaccinium myrtillus L. is standardized to contain 36% anthocyanins (anthocyanosides), calculated as equivalent to 25% anthocyanins. Flavonoids, specifically anthocyanins, constitute bilberry's active fraction. These natural pigments give the fruit its deep blue color and have been directly correlated to its antioxidant activity. Fifteen anthocyanins have been identified in bilberry fruit and extract and they generate a very specific HPLC profile that can be used to confirm the authenticity of the extract.

In other news, the company's Sabalselect® (saw palmetto extract) has been chosen for the first large clinical trial of this herbal product to take place in the U.S. Investigators at the University of California, San Francisco, supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), will examine the effect of saw palmetto on urinary symptoms in men with moderate to severe benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

    National Bioscience Corporation, Warwick, NY
National Bioscience Corporation has introduced a new standardized antioxidant, Myricetin, which is a "phyto-drug" that could be very helpful in the treatment of diabetes. Myricetin mimics insulin in stimulating lipogens and glucose transport in adipocytes and enhance the stimulatory effect of insulin. In addition, recent studies have revealed that Myricetin possesses pharmacologically relevant anti-COX and anti-testosterone 5-alpha-reductase activity. In other developments, the company has introduced several other antioxidant ingredients including blueberry leaves antioxidants 60% for cardio-tonic and prevention of age related neurodegenerative and cardiovascular disorders; grape leaves extract 80%; Rhododendron caucasicum 50% and Rhodiola rosea extract. Additionally the company is highlighting free radical neutralizers derived from edible fruits, which include apple 60%, pomegranate 80%, white cherry 60%, prunes 60%, apricot/nectarine extract 60%, mango extract 20%, Cornus mascula (mountain cherry-"Caucasian Noni") 60% for healthy cholesterol and cardio-tonic.

    Polyphenolics, Madera, CA
The newest product in the line up at Polyphenolics is MegaNatural® whole grape extract, which contains 25% anthocyanins and 50% total phenols. This product is very similar to bilberry extract in composition and the phenol profile is similar to the profile of red grape juice. The company has also developed MegaNatural® GSKE grape skin extract with a phenol content of over 80%. Most recently the company completed GRAS affirmation for MegaNatural Gold grape seed extract and MegaNatural GSKE grape skin extract for use in beverages.

    RFI Ingredients, Blauvelt, NY
New from RFI Ingredients is OxyPhyte™ white tea extract. White tea is a rare tea produced almost exclusively in China and comes from the same plant (Camellia sinensis) as green, oolong and black tea. The descriptive term "white" comes from the silvery buds on the plant, which impart a silvery color to the tea. White tea is the least processed of all teas as it is rapidly steamed and dried rather than fermented or roasted-it is even less processed than green tea. Researchers believe that it is the minimal processing of white tea that yields a higher concentration of tea polyphenols. In addition to its antioxidant properties, research has shown white tea to have potent anti-cancer qualities. Researchers from the Linus Pauling Institute tested white tea's ability to protect bacteria from DNA damage and found white tea to be a much more powerful anti-mutagen than green tea. Additional studies at the Linus Pauling Institute showed white tea to be effective in reducing precancerous lesions in rats.

OxyPhyte™ white tea extract is available standardized to 40% or 90% polyphenols (25% or 70% catechin concentration respectively). OxyPhyte™ white tea extract complements RFI's OxyPhyte line of antioxidants and antioxidant blends containing fruits, vegetables and herbs.

    Sabinsa, Piscataway, NJ
Rosemary extract, Curcumin C3 Complex® and Selenium SeLECT® are now offered at Sabinsa. In terms of rosemary extract, many of the beneficial, biological effects are attributed to its potent antioxidant action as a number of free radicals are effectively scavenged by the active principles in the extract. Detailed studies on the antioxidant activity and probable pro-oxidant actions of various components in rosemary extract have revealed that carnosol and carnosic acid may account for over 90% of the antioxidant properties of rosemary extract, and carnosic acid was found to protect DNA from oxidative damage. Ursolic acid and its derivatives form oil-resistant barriers on the skin and hair as they do in the waxy coating of fruits. Further, ursolic acid has been used to treat photo aged skin because it prevents and improves the appearance of wrinkles and age spots by restoring the skin's collagen bundle structures and its elasticity. Rosmarinic acid's antioxidant activity is relative to its chemical structure. Rosmarinic acid possesses four phenolic hydrogens that contribute to its ability to control free radical oxidation. Sabinsa offers rosemary extract standardized to contain 6% carnosic acid, 1.5% ursolic acid and 1% rosmarinic acid.

Free radical chain reactions are implicated in most degenerative biological reactions. Extensive research involving curcuminoids, the active compounds in Sabinsa's Curcumin C3 Complex, has shown them to be capable of a dual function-prevention of free radical formation and intervention to neutralize existing free radicals. Because of their broad mechanism of action, curcuminoids may be aptly referred to as "bioprotectants." Tetrahydrocurcuminoids, thought to be the active metabolites of curcuminoids, are also potent antioxidants. A composition containing these compounds offers equal or greater biological effects without the hassle of curcumin's characteristic yellow color. Sabinsa offers its patented Curcumin C3 Complex in powder or granular composition, which contains a minimum 95% curcuminoids. It also offers a patent pending, standardized 95% tetrahydrocurcuminoids product for oral and topical use.

The company's Selenium SeLECT® is a clinically evaluated L-selenomethionine composition. This source of selenium is recognized as bioavailable and safe for humans and animals. Selenium is a crucial component of glutathione peroxidase, an essential enzyme, which defuses hydrogen peroxide, preventing lipid peroxidation and other antioxidant reactions. The accumulation of hydrogen peroxide can destroy blood cells. Research into a number of deadly cancers in humans has shown a positive correlation with patients suffering from cancer also having lower than normal selenium levels. Currently L-selenomethionine is the subject of a 32,000 subject clinical trial for the prevention of prostate cancer. Sabinsa offers Selenium SeLECT in two strengths, a pure 40% elemental selenium or a trituration containing 0.5% elemental selenium.

Technical Sourcing International (TSI), Missoula, MT

New advances continue to drive Technical Sourcing International's (TSI) expansion as a competitive producer and supplier of high quality botanical extracts with antioxidant capability. What furthered this progress was the development of an ORAC test method for measuring antioxidant potential. At TSI an extensive database is being used to guide product development and optimize extraction processes.
