Netherlands-based DSM Venturing has participated in a financing round in Ganeden Biotech, Inc., a U.S. probiotic company that markets dietary supplements focused on digestive health. In this $12 million financing round, DSM was joined by Capital Resource Partners, Boston, MA, a private equity firm. Ganeden’s products are based on a unique spore-forming and lactic acid-producing bacterium, Bacillus coagulans. Ganeden’s proprietary Bacillus coagulans strains, particularly GanedenBC30, distinguish themselves from other probiotics particularly with respect to longer shelf life, better gastric acid survivability and resistance against temperature and pressure during processing. Ganeden also runs a licensing business to exploit the potential of its BC strains in other applications, such as animal feed, functional foods, feminine hygiene products and environmental solutions.
DSM Nutritional Products, Inc., Parsippany, NJ, has strengthened its strategic alliance with Kemin Industries, Inc. and Kemin Health, L.C., Des Moines, IA, to significantly grow lutein usage and the eye health supplement category worldwide. Under an existing agreement, DSM currently offers FloraGLO brand lutein products made with crystalline lutein supplied by Kemin. Under the terms of the new global agreement, Kemin will supply FloraGLO brand lutein exclusively through DSM. DSM will globally commercialize FloraGLO brand lutein products through distributors and directly to customers in the dietary supplement, food and beverage and over-the-counter pharmaceutical industries.
