Nutraceutix: Delivering Ingredients Through Advanced Technologies

When the company was first established, Nutraceutix produced probiotic organisms for agricultural and other specialized applications. However, it quickly moved into the market for probiotics intended for humans, which now represents its primary line of business alongside finished nutraceutical manufacturing.

Today, Nutraceutix can supply more than two dozen strains of bulk probiotic culture concentrates in powder form, custom blends, bulk finished forms such as capsules and tablets, as well as fully finished products including retail-ready bottles, said Tim Gamble, vice president, Sales and Marketing.

Since Nutraceutix transitioned to consumer products, the company has developed and advanced its technological abilities to deliver quality nutraceuticals. “With the core probiotic production business firmly established two decades ago, Nutraceutix began its research and development of nutraceutical delivery technologies suitable for both probiotics and other active ingredients,” said Mr. Gamble.“Over the last 10 years, Nutraceutix has received more than half a dozen process and technology patents related to the production of advanced, highly effective finished forms of probiotics and nutraceuticals.”

For example, the company’s BIO-tract delivery system heightens absorption and efficacy for probiotics and a wide variety of other active ingredients, while also simplifying and improving dose compliance. BIO-tract is effective for controlled, extended release, acid resistance (sensitive ingredient protection) and buffering (reduction of stomach upset). Nutraceutix has recently received patents for the BIO-tract delivery system in China and Australia.

In addition, the company’s LiveBac tableting process helps protect product shelf life. “Nutraceutix has also recently announced further substantiation of its ability to produce probiotic products for clients that meet label claim at expiry, even at room temperature,” Mr. Gamble noted.“This unique capability allows brands to produce safe, natural, non-GMO probiotic products that meet regulated label requirements without incurring the costs and complications of refrigeration during distribution and at retail, or forcing them to incorporate genetically modified or other fringe organisms in their products.”

Alongside its advanced delivery systems, Nutraceutix has received GMP certification from NSF International for its contract manufacturing facility, a distinction that Mr. Gamble said “quality-conscious customers continue to take advantage of as they bring their products, expertly manufactured for them by Nutraceutix, to market.”

Looking ahead, with an eye on the current economic freefall, Mr. Gamble said change for the industry is inevitable. “From our perspective, the overall depression in consumer spending on nutraceuticals is being overcome by a consolidation of spending on what consumers feel needs to be a part of their basic, daily regimen. Probiotics are clearly emerging—and rightfully so—as one of the next ‘daily basics’ for many consumers who may be spending less overall, but are spending more wisely. They are eliminating snake-oil supplements, educating themselves more about what should be a part of their daily regimen and buying accordingly.”

While the economy continues to cut cash flow, Mr. Gamble feels his company is positioned to capitalize on new opportunities this situation presents. “Our business, and that of many of our dedicated customers, is strong and growing, largely as a result of what is going on in the economy and the consolidation effect it is having on consumer buying behavior.”

The company remains in solid standing and will emerge from the current recession due to its focus on quality and commitment to improving ingredient delivery systems, he added.

“As consumers become more educated about what makes a good dietary supplement, the demand for our skills, capabilities and novel processes and technologies, and the superior products they can produce, will strengthen,” he predicted.“The investments in research and development that we’ve made over the years are clearly paying off, and in turn we are well funded to continue our pursuit of new advancements that our clients can take advantage of for their customers’ benefit.”—S.M.
