Cantox Health Sciences Inc., an Intertek company, announced that Dr. Ian Munro has passed away at the age of 71 following his battle with cancer. As one of the founding shareholders of Cantox in 1985 and an esteemed scientist, Dr. Munro led Cantox as president from 1990 to 2006. He was also an internationally recognized authority on toxicology with more than 35 of years experience dealing with complex regulatory issues related to product safety and risk assessment. He has in excess of 150 scientific publications in the fields of toxicology and risk assessment to his credit. Dr. Munro formerly held senior positions at Health Canada as director of the Bureau of Chemical Safety and director general of the Food Directorate, Health Protection Branch. A past member of the Board of Directors of the Toxicology Forum, Dr. Munro held memberships in the Society of Toxicology and the American College of Toxicology. He served on numerous national and international committees, including those of the World Health Organization, the International Agency for Research on Cancer and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Munro graduated from McGill University in biochemistry and nutrition, and held a PhD from Queen's University in pharmacology and toxicology. Dr. Munro was a fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, London. He was also Director of the Canadian Centre for Toxicology from 1983 to 1992 and a professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. In April, the Ian and Jayne Munro Chair in Food Safety was established at McGill University via a generous donation from the Munros. Based in the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, the Chair will lead McGill’s newly established Food Safety and Quality Program (FSQP), an interdisciplinary teaching and research initiative.
